The Gilpas exploration permits are located in the South Norrbotten – North Västerbotten uranium province, which is the most important district of uranium mineralization in Sweden and includes the Pleutajokk and other deposits that were discovered in the 1960s and 1970s. The local bedrock geology is dominated by older, feldspar porphyry granites and Svecofennian supracustral, metavolcanic rocks that are subdivided into meta-rhyolites and meta-andesite-basalt units.
The permit includes the sites where boulders with very high uranium contents (up to 29% U) were found during the later phases of the uranium exploration campaigns of the 1970s. The boulders are located in glacial till along a 750m trend. All Star Minerals’ exploration programme will include further boulder prospecting, geochemistry and ground geophysics to identify primary source areas up-ice from the boulders discovered to date, and to locate sites to target structurally favourable geology for high grade uranium mineralization. Approximately 4,000 metres of drilling is planned in two phases during 2009. |
